Leaf sculptor on cottonwood - Limenitis archippus

Leaf sculptor on cottonwood - Limenitis archippus
Decorah, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
July 24, 2016
"Ornament" attached to leaf midvein. Here, I've pulled the ornament apart in hopes of finding a pupa inside, but no luck. It looks to me like the leaf pieces were cut completely from the leaf, then attached to this spot on the midvein with silk. Also, is that frass attached to the tip of the midvein (making it appear thicker than it really is)?
