orange-and-black cicada - below - Hadoa duryi
near Sierra Vista, Cochise County, Arizona, USA
July 2, 2007
Size: body about 25 mm
same place (Miller Canyon Trail) and presumably same species as these ones; there were hordes of live ones in the bushes, and a few dead ones such as this along the trail

Thanks, Andy.
Moved from Cicadas to new species page.

All I remember of the song was a constant whine. I didn't discern a start-up or ending sequence of any individual because there were so many of them calling at once.

Tibicen druryi
This is a female. The red-orange underside is distinctive. Please give us details of the song (which has never been reported) and try to get a shot of the underside of a male, showing the large opercula (flaps at the base of the abdomen which cover the ear drums).

Dead, or paralyzed?
Shoot, I'll bet cicada killers dropped them. A trio of cicada killer researchers came through here earlier this month, but were a bit early for the cicada killers. Have you seen any of the wasps, or 'did' you see any of the wasps, in the area?

I didn't see any
cicada killers in the area; the only wasp I remember seeing near there [got a poor photo] was a black one with a bluish sheen.
