Giant Ichneumon - Megarhyssa greenei - male

Giant Ichneumon - Megarhyssa greenei - Male
London, Ontario, Canada
June 2, 2004
Size: 16-18 mm
On beech leaf in woods.
Update: changed title from "red-tailed yellow wasp"

Moved from Megarhyssa macrurus.

Coloration of forewing and hind femur are indicative of greenei

Moved from Orange and Brown.

Definitely reminds me of an ichneumon wasp, perhaps Megarhyssa sp.?

Or perhaps Ophion sp.?

Male giant ichneumon.
This is a really nice image of a male Megarhyssa sp. Hard to believe it is related to those huge, long-tailed jobs, huh:-)

Thanks, Eric (and Richard previously). You're right about these looking very different than the females; I hadn't made the connection.
