Polistes nest -
Polistes arizonensis
Tucson, Sweetwater wetland, Pima County, Arizona, USA
July 25, 2007
This nest was under the roof of a ramada at the ponds at the treatment plant. I think it's P. instabilis because of the very thin yellow stripes on the abdomen

Polistes arizonensis nest (AZ)
Wow, thanks for posting the first image of this rarely observed and collected species! Note that the sides of the thorax (mesopleuron) are red and yellow, not black and yellow as in P. instabilis. BTW: In the U.S. the latter is so far only known from southern TX.

This nest is probably stil there, and not too far from my home, should I collect some specimen? Maybe for the U o A, I'll ask Carl Olson. Thanks for revisiting my wasps!

Specimens
Margarethe: I would love to have some specimens for our research collection (Univ. of Guelph, Ontario), one of the largest insect collections in Canada. I am one of only a very few people doing active taxonomic research on North American Polistes. Unfortunately, we have no specimens of this species in our collection. If you could send me some it would be extremely useful for my research.

Polistes specimen
I wil try to get some if the nest is still there, even though Eric Eaton thinks that I might get stung. How should I preserve and ship them? Ethanol?
