Anisodactylus merula - Anisodactylus merula - male

Anisodactylus merula - Anisodactylus merula - Male
Oak Ridge, Anderson County, Tennessee, USA
June 30, 2014
Size: 12mm
This is a specimen I identified as Anisodactylus merula. Noonan's key bases this identification by the presence of a laterally extending huneral tooth, along with the distinctive shape of the tip of the aedeagus. I have looked at many specimens of this species in Tennessee and found none with this humeral tooth, but the males depicting the expected shape of the aedeagus. As there are no images of the aedeagus on the guide I thought it might be helpful to add one!

Let me know if anyone disagrees or has comments on what I've said above. The picture of the whole beetle is not the best.... I plan to upload a much better one in the near future.

This specimen was collected by NEON in a pitfall trap set for two weeks containing a 1:1 ratio of water and propylene glycol.
