Velvet Ant - Dasymutilla bioculata

Velvet Ant - Dasymutilla bioculata
Peyton, El Paso County, Colorado, USA
July 31, 2007
Size: 17 mm
This is the best shot I could get. It ran fast and long.

I'm thinking Dasymutilla?

Feel free to Frass if a better picture for CO in July comes up.

Dasymutilla creusa
This one is D. creusa, based on range, coloration and how long the hair is.

Dasymutilla, I'd say too. But I'm no expert.
The vast majority of velvet ants at this site have been IDed as Dasymutilla, and yours looks like the few I've seen in person. As you observed, they don't stay put and are hard to shoot. You were able to get a nicely detailed shot; too bad the wasp ducked under the foliage. I guarantee you'll do better next time, in the absence of the "bug fever" that often comes with a first-time photo.
