Thick-headed Fly - Physoconops brachyrhynchus

Thick-headed Fly - Physoconops brachyrhynchus
Adams County, Pennsylvania, USA
July 31, 2007
Size: 1/2"
I thought this fly might be in the Picture-winged family but I did not find it there. I am not even sure it is a fly. Can someone point me to the proper family? Very beautiful creature but I have never seen one before. How about a wasp? Thread-waisted maybe?

Moved to Physoconops brachyrhynchus
Moved from Subgenus Pachyconops.

The mostly yellow frons (darker medially and near antennal bases); lack of a sharp "T" pattern on the frons; darkened 1st posterior cell; lack of a distinct complete pollinose post-vertical stripe; hyaline 1st basal cell; and overall dark coloration of abdomen and thorax...all lead unequivocally to P. brachyrhynchus in the key of Camras (1955).

The red of the humeri, scutellum, and legs...and the yellowish dusting of the humeri, metanotum, and distal ends of the tergites all agree well with Williston's description of the synonymous P. xanthopareus here.
