Oosternum pubescens

Oosternum pubescens
Galena Gateway Park, Jo Daviess County, Illinois, USA
August 1, 2016
Size: ~2mm
This keys to Oosternum (=Cercyon) pubescens in FIKÁČEK et al 2009. Pronotum not costate. Elytral interval 2 narrower than 3. Median portion of prosternum weakly demarcated from lateral portions. O. pubescens is the only species in its species group and one of only four from north of Mexico (O. costatum, O. sharpi, O. attacomis). The latter two have the median portion of the prosternum demarcated from the lateral portions by ridges, the median portion being narrow in O. sharpi and wider in O. attacomis. O. costatum has the pronotum costate and the prosternum with a pair of pits.

Five specimens were collected from a carrion trap in a restored prairie. Blatchley lists this species in Indiana, and photos already in the guide which appear to be this species are from Texas and Florida.
