These looked like patches of purple dust floating on puddles left after the recent rain. When we took pictures and zoomed in, we saw masses of tiny hexapods. The last two pictures are not very clear, but they appear to show evidence of molting and possibly more adult forms (orange) that may aid in identification.

Springtails for sure. Members of a couple of different orders from the looks of it.

Incidentally, they're hexapods, but not insects. :)

If you asked me,
I would say springtails. I am no expert though, so please wait for one.
But they do kind of look like Podura aquatica...
