I temporarily moved this posting to mysteries. There are more photos that need to be posted and hopefully they'll receive comment/guidance from some of you. Until then...


April 10, 2016: collected last year’s stems of Cup plant, Silphium perfoliatum, before a scheduled burn, kept in garage
April 27, 2016: started dealing with the stems, cutting sections, slicing apart, lots of life
April 30, 2016: separated out a larva in a stem edge gall
did not check daily
May 26, 2016: must have pupated a while ago, eyes are red
May 28, 2016: a bit of red on the mandibles
June 8, 2016: adult (found dead but I had been out of town)

Silphium Gall Wasps, Two New Species
“..wasps pupated in little cells within the pith just under the outer wall of the stem” Henderson, Sauer
