July 9, 2016: looking for Papaipema larvae in the stems of Angelica, Angelica atropurpurea. Found several.
This one was dead with lots of other species larvae, flies

Probably can't tell if larvae & pupae go with these adults
July 22, 2016: flies began emerging

This is the right hand one.

This is the left hand one whose wings weren't completely inflated.

The big round hole near the head
looks like an exit hole of a wasp, which would mean the phorids are scavenging a carcass rather than being the cause of death. I found a sort of similar situation, here.

I figured they were scavenging a dead carcass but completely missed the connection between the hole and a previous emergence. I just thought of the hole as a viewing port to see the fly larvae. Oh my.
