Giant Swallowtail For Illinois In August - Papilio cresphontes

Giant Swallowtail For Illinois In August - Papilio cresphontes
Norris City, White County, Illinois, USA
August 2, 2007
Data posting for this species in Illinois, for the month of August.

This butterfly flapped it's wings more than any other Swallowtail I've ever seen. That's why the picture isn't very good, but I hope to be able to update. The month is early....

I'm pretty sure this is a Giant Swallowtail, but would like confirmation on it.

Giant swallowtail, confirmed.
There aren't many around here, and those that are remain constantly aflap. Good luck on a reshoot! The only decent images I've been able to get were in a butterfly house.

Host plants in California are primarily citrus. Knowing you aren't picking oranges in the back yard, I checked butterfliesandmoths to see what they listed. To wit:

"Trees and herbs of the citrus family (Rutaceae) including Citrus species, prickly ash (Zanthoxylum americanum), and hop tree (Ptelea trifoliata)."

Host Plants
This particular specimen was flitting about from blossom to blossom of Red Clover. That stuff just seems to attract all kinds of Butterflies! I might have to try it myself.
