Free-flying False Click Beetle - Dromaeolus cylindricollis

Free-flying False Click Beetle - Dromaeolus cylindricollis
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
August 2, 2007
Size: about 8.2 mm
This is the first free-flying eucnemid I've encountered in daylight. Spotted this one on the side of my van on hot day. The outline is much like a true click beetle's but the quick, nervous movements and shy body language said quite definitely Eucnemidae. I whipped out my pocket vial and nabbed it. Later while shooting it in my light arena I witnessed some vigorous clicking as the beetle strove to right itself. I had never seen a eucnemid click like this. It bears similarities and differences I think to others already posted.

Moved
Moved from Dromaeolus. Due to black color and lack of actual stria, Jyrki has determined this to be Dromaeolus cylindricollis. Presence or absence of sex comb on the first protarsomere will indicate gender. I'll have a look this evening.

Moved
Moved from False Click Beetles. Eucnemidae authority Jyrki Muona says this is Dromaeolus. I need to check a few fine details for him to enable a species determination,
