Anthidium Female - Anthidium manicatum
Santa Cruz, corner of Hubbard St. and Market st., Santa Cruz County, California, USA
April 17, 2015
This A. manicatum female I encountered in the yard of a respected authority on insects and plants. When I sent him a copy of the photo he identified the plant as Lupinus microcarpus var. microcarpus. It was a beauty of a Lupine with no less that 18 whorls (levels). I see these Lupines often but not even close to this size!
If you are in this part of Santa Cruz and want to see Anthidium species I've seen A. maculosum and A. manicatum on Grant St. just a block or two off of Market St. on the right hand side, look for the blue flowering plants. BTW, the couple living here are oceanography professionals, and share an interest in the plant and animals we share the planet with. Anthidium and naturalists in two different locations in Santa Cruz!
