Flies in stem swellings, Polymnia

Flies in stem swellings, Polymnia
Decorah, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
February 14, 2017
Fly puparia inside swellings on winter stems of leaf-cup, Polymnia sp. The puparium on the right has a crack in it -- my fault, I think, when I opened up the swelling.

So far I've only found three such swellings, each with one puparium inside. All three enclosed their puparia incompletely, i.e., each swelling had a conspicuous opening or crack in it (the example on the left in the above photo is shown as I found it). A friend plans to get close-up shots of a the third puparium, removed from the stem, so I expect we'll post those soon. Rearing in progress.

Three winter stem swellings, same host plant, same location, that have no visible openings/holes:

MJ attempted to rear a similar-looking Polymnia gall

that produced two wasps.
