Carpenter Bee? - Melissodes rivalis
Seatac, King County, Washington, USA
August 4, 2007
Size: approx 17mm
Found nectaring on Bull Thistle, Cirsium vulgare. It was in a "waste area" of the park I was exploring...an abandoned sports field, surrounded by mixed woodland.

Digger Bee (Anthophorinae)
Carpenter bees have proportionately larger wings, and lack this whitish pattern on the abdomen.

It was hard getting any photos of these bees, in fact the rear photo is the first one. When it saw me it took off, that's why the image is a little blurry!
