New BG Tortricid - Crocidosema longipalpana

New BG Tortricid - Crocidosema longipalpana
Hobe Sound, Martin County, Florida, USA
February 15, 2017
Size: 6 mm
I originally thought the name was Chrocidoseme lichivora due to several spelling errors at Tortricid.net, thus some of the confusion below.

Moved
Moved from Litchi Bud Moth.

Crocidosema litchivora was synonymized with C. longipalpana. Although Tortricid.net shows C. litchivora, it is listed as a synonym of C. longipalpana. This source also cites the original descriptions. I have added those citations with links to the Info page for C. longipalpana.

I do not know the source of the synonymy but will try to find out. The original description for C. longipalpana is in German. I tried translating it but found it not too be terribly useful. The long recurved palpi are very distinctive for this group. There is a good photo of the holotype for C. litchivora here. The description for C. litchivora has a lot of information. C. longipalpana is discussed as being a part of this group but the possibility of it being the same species is oddly not mentioned. The images at BOLD for C. longipalpana, as noted below by Ann, also seem to match reasonably well. So I think a tentative ID for this is supported.

Nice addition!

Edit - Dr. John Brown, coauthor of the paper in which Baixeras described Crocidosema litchivora, emailed me that the synonymy was made in the World Catalogue of Insects, Vol. 5. He explained that Baixeras discovered the type specimen for longipalpana in a collection in Germany and recognized that the two species were the same.

Thanks for your research efforts on this moth! I also saw your comment on the page for C. litchivora 3274.5. What becomes of the common name? It still seems appropriate for this moth, since it is a pest on litchi trees.

Common Name
I'm putting this on the back burner. I haven't spoken to Bob about this. He's retired and I'm not sure I want to trouble him. At some point I will be dsicussing common names with Greg Pohl. MPG's list is not in sync with his list when it comes to common names.

The common name may not be appropriate. Calling Crocidosema longipalpana a Litchi Bud Moth gives the impression that in non-native which it is not. And there are other species which feed on Litchi. I've no experiecnce with common names so I'd have to defer to others.

I don't know
As far as I can tell, the common name was created by Bob Patterson. I'll ask him. In the mean time, I've added it to the Info page as an alternative common name.

Tentative Move pending complex decision
Moved from Butterflies and Moths.

Don't want this one to get "lost".

Gary, it would be great to have this one, but I don't have any way to verify it. I tried BOLD and did not see it among their species. Can you give me any more information to pass on. I am going to call the post to the attention of Steve Nanz and Khyl Austin. They probably know how to verify it.

Thanks Ann
I could not find any other information about this species. I am continuing research, but don't have all the appropriate literature yet- I was hoping someone at BG might (maybe Steve or Khyl?). An unusual moth like this really makes the whole ID process interesting!

Thanks Gary. I tried the Biodiversity Library and funet, but I haven't gone to the tortricid web site. Wanted to find the original description. Steve answered that he is in Cuba and can't get to it for a while. Kyhl has not answered yet. He is on spring break. Again, congratulations.

I think I figured it out. I was misled by the multiple misspellings at the Tortricid.net site. The name should be Crocidosema litchivora – Litchi Bud Moth 3274.5. BG has a page, but no images. C. longipalpana 3274.2 is a synonym according to MPG, and there is a matching image in the spread specimens at MPG. BG has a page for C. longipalpana also, but no images. BOLD however reports C. longipalpana but not C. litchivora. These two may be part of a Crocidosema species complex.

Thanks to Debbie Matthews for helping me realize the spelling mistake.

FINALLY found a green one on Bold [url=http://www.boldsystems.org/pics/ITLP/IMG_1197%2B1371478140.JPG]BOLD[url]. Moving tentatively to your species.

Thanks Ann
for the help!
