 Stylopized Sphecid - Eupathocera auripedis

Stylopized Sphecid - Eupathocera auripedis
New York City, Central Park, New York, USA
June 6, 2007
This Isodontia (mexicana?) was vigorously, even frantically, waving his abdomen around and repeatedly sriking it agaist his perch, first a wood rail, then various leaves. At first, I thought it was trying to disloge the Strepsipteran but apparently it was a frass problem. As soon as he cleared the white frass, as seen in pic 4, he stopped waving and striking his abdomen, groomed himself fore and aft for a while, then flew off. Pic 3 shows the Stylopid well. If someone confirms the wasp ID I will post a blow-up of the parasite to the Strepsistera page.

Isodontia.
This is likely a female Isodontia mexicana. She would have acquired the sawdust in the cavity she was using for her nest.
