Catocala unijuga

Catocala unijuga
Harms Woods Forest Preserve, Glenview, Cook County, Illinois, USA
August 5, 2007
We're thinking this is again unijuga and just like our #127999. It would have a wingspan between 8 and 9 cm, and flashed red and black when it flew from the tree. We're posting it even though we have the earlier post because, for all we know, they're two different species.

Catocala unijuga
Everything looks right for C. unijuga.

How do you guys get such good photos of these Catocala? The ones around here must be extra skittish. I can spend a solid 2 minutes slowly sneaking up on one and just when I'm getting where I want to be ... good bye!

Our experience is that these guys
don't like to fly in the daytime here. When they are resting on the tree trunks you can walk right up to them. Our trouble is getting them to show hindwings. We tickle their noses or their antennae or even try to lift their forewings, and nothing - till suddenly they explode off the tree, scaring the bejeebers out of the photographer and just barely allowing you the opportunity to tell if it was yellow or red!
