Eriocrania semipurpurella? - Eriocrania semipurpurella

Eriocrania semipurpurella? - Eriocrania semipurpurella
La Grande, Union County, Oregon, USA
March 29, 2017
Size: 5-6 mm
This tiny caddisfy-shaped moth was discovered near a floodlight on one of my moth surveys. The FWs seemed to be a very dark fuscous color, but with supplemental light from my flash I could see that the FWs were actually an irridescent dark purplish color. Silvery-white scales were dotted throughout the FWs, but were more numerous on the distal half. There was a distinct silvery-white patch on the tornus that extended into the adjacent fringe. The head and thorax had long, sparse, spiky brownish scales. The head shape was dark and flattened, reminiscent of a snakefly's.

Special thanks to Kyhl Austin for his invaluable assistance with this identification.
