Bumble Bee - Bombus - male

Bumble Bee - Bombus - Male
Peyton, El Paso County, Colorado, USA
August 7, 2007
Size: 25-30mm
Which bumble bee? Bombus fervidus, maybe?

Moved
Moved from Bumble Bees.

Bombus fervidus sensu lato male
I think I can see black hairs in the basal metasomal segments (as opposed to pure yellow) indicating that this may be subspecies (or species) californicus rather than fervidus sensu stricto. It can be difficult to separate these two forms even with specimens in hand.

It would be helpful to know the relative abudance of californicus and fervidus sensu stricto in your area.

Not sure about local numbers...
but I'm sure Mr. Goertz does. We have a Perovskia atripicifolia (Russian Sage) in our yard that many pollinators enjoy, including this one.
