Pipevine Swallowtail--first instar larvae - Battus philenor

Pipevine Swallowtail--first instar larvae - Battus philenor
Parkwood, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
August 8, 2007
Size: 2.5 mm
First instar larvae from the same batch of eggs shown in linked image, though not those precise three. Length measured in place. I'll see if I can raise these to pupae. I'm hoping this will be successful, because I collected the eggs immediately after oviposition, before there was a chance for any attack by parasites.

Make sure you have
access to plenty of food plant - they eat a lot in the last instar. Found several wandering larvae in Arizona, wandering because they had eaten all the vine and were seeking more food of which I could not find any in the area.
