I think this is another black spreadwing, lestus stultus. There were a lot of these dark damselflies and they were quite large, larger than the emerald spreadwings I've seen up in the mountains, larger than bluets. And yes, they were spreading their wings like proper spreadwings most of the time, just not when my camera was in focus.

Pictures taken at Nagasawa Park, Santa Rosa, Ca., today 4-9-17. The pictures were not at the main lake but at the "ephemeral pond" near the parking lot, and a more experienced ode nutter reported black spreadwings there.
