monster centipede - Scolopendra heros

monster centipede - Scolopendra heros
canyon lake, Arizona, USA
August 9, 2007
Size: 6" at least.
frazz if you must. we were on the lake in a bouncing boat and found this fellow who was very busy hunting. I didn't feel like putting my hand next to it for sizing purpose as I didn't know how dangerous it could be. What a find! It was right at waters edge, in and around all the cracks hunting. The waves rolled over it once and I was afraid it would be washed into the water, but many legs make for good grip, and it was off to the next crack and possible meal.

same monster different day
We made it out to Canyon Lake today and went by where we found this baby - and what do you know - it was there again. Better pictures as we used flash and it was holding still. If you look closely at the head of the beastie, you can see spider legs sticking out - it was feeding!

Scolopendra heros
Nice centipede!. When I was in AZ a few weeks ago, the only one of these we saw was a roadkill:~(

thanks
this big guy was very much alive and on the hunt. very interesting to watch, and HUGE - biggest centipede I've ever seen! my heart was thumping from the excitement!
