It was this unique posturing that actually aided me in identifying it as Croesus latitarsus, the Dusky Birch Sawfly. In Cranshaw's "Garden Insects of North America" (1), p. 78, he mentions "Larvae hold a rather unusual S-shaped form while they feed along the leaf margin"...and his photos are perfect match to these. Yay!
