Thanks for the kind comments Beatriz & Lynette,
It was this unique posturing that actually aided me in identifying it as Croesus latitarsus, the Dusky Birch Sawfly. In Cranshaw's "Garden Insects of North America"

, p. 78, he mentions "Larvae hold a rather unusual S-shaped form while they feed along the leaf margin"...and his photos are perfect match to these. Yay!
