Square-headed Red-belly - Tachysphex - male

Square-headed Red-belly - Tachysphex - Male
Tonopah Desert, Maricopa County, Arizona, USA
June 7, 2015
Size: 7mm
These are shots of a Square-headed Wasp that might be a male in the genus Tachytes or Tachysphex. I'm not sure yet. I have lots of views, but these some of the best ones. (sunlit and shaded)
I filmed a slightly larger male the following day. His images will be posted separately. We can see a sub-basal ventral depression on the fore-femora, in some of the shots. (maybe a member of the Tachytes-abdominalis-group)
If I key this guy in the Tachytes-abdominalis-group, this should be a male Tachytes birkmanni. Incorrect - It can't be that species, because of the red abdomen. See comment from Dr. Buck, below.

Moved
Moved from Gastrosericina. Clearly not a Tachytes, and clearly not Tachytes birkmanni, whose male has an all-black metasoma (red only in female).
