Western River Cruiser - Macromia magnifica

Western River Cruiser - Macromia magnifica

I promised I'd go back for better pictures. After 4 hours of hiking a searching and taking photos, I finally found my quarry. This is the best I can do until I find one perched (ie never). :-)

wow
Superb shots. Best flight shots I've seen of this species.

These are great
Your best hopes for finding one perched would be to get there early in the morning before it gets warm, or maybe go on an overcast day when it is cool. I am not sure where these guys "roost," but I would check under overhanging branches of trees, in tall grass, any type of vegetation that provides some cover. Or you can just get a net and pose one yourself.

wow
Incredible shots. Any hints on technique so I can attempt to get something even close to as sharp as this?

tips...
Well, this individual was flying back and forth near ground level at full speed. To get the photos, I used the manual focus. As it came in I'd try to keep it constantly in focus, so the moment when it was in front of me only a tiny correction was needed. As you can see, it's not fool-proof, as getting a perfectly focused shot is almost impossible. Also, shoot with as high a shutter speed as possible, I used 1/1000th but I probably should have tried with 1/2000 or even 1/4000. Hope this helps!
