I`m okay with this in Syrphus where it is safe. Were the eyes any clearer in the original photo?

Not really clearer in the original photo.

As you said, since it is a female I would not either rule out completely the possibility of S. torvus.

Apparently rectus has the upper part of the first basal cell without microtrichia like vitripennis but this feature is almost impossible in most photographs. Sometimes you can say for certain there are hairs on the eyes. I think in future anything other than certain will go in Syrphus sp.

Thanks for the larger image.
Thanks for the larger image. Still difficult but Syrphus sp. is best as eyes without hairs looks more likely in the larger image and there is no visible important hind femur.

The hairs on the eyes are very difficult to see, especially in females. In a zoomed image I determined this had hairs on the eyes seen as a white halo around the eyes and some hairs posteriorly at side of right eye.

See the images of Syrphus torvus female above.
The first basal cell doesn`t appear to have a bare margin along the upper part of the cell which makes me think this isn`t vitripennis and ribesii usually has the lower frons more yellow and more extensive dust spots...
