Big Fly - Diogmites basalis - Diogmites basalis

Big Fly - Diogmites basalis - Diogmites basalis
Orange, Franklin County, Massachusetts, USA
August 11, 2007
Size: Approximately 2 inches
This large fly-type bug landed on my son while I was driving. It just sat there until my son finally had to exit the vehicle and brush it off of him! He would like to know what it is, if you can please ID it for us!

Moved
Moved from Robber Flies.

The short answer: Robber fly
You're likely to get a tighter ID, but you might want to look at that section of Bug Guide in the meanwhile.

Cool!
Thanks...I will let my son know!
