sawfly larva?

sawfly larva?

On what I think is buckthorn. This was the only one on the small tree and not feeding, it's possible it fell there.

Moved from ID Request.

I think it's Selandriinae:

Some similar larvae feed on ferns. At least some of them bore into wood to pupate, so they could be found wandering around away from their host plants. There may also be similar ones that don't feed on ferns.

Thanks, Charley, that looks right! and this was by a creek with ferns all over the creek banks.
