Sycamore boring caterpillars - Synanthedon resplendens

Sycamore boring caterpillars - Synanthedon resplendens
Aliso Viejo, Orange County, California, USA
April 26, 2017
Size: 1"
I was clearing some brush around the base of my sycamore trees when I noticed large piles of little pellets on the ground and I was very concerned it might be some sort of termite infestation at first.

After using a hatchet to expose some of the tunnels and finding what I initially thought were beetle grubs I was momentarily relieved until I remembered the recent trouble with invasive polyphagous shot hole borers California has had.

Thankfully after further examination these turned out to just be caterpillars of the native Sycamore Borer moths!
