Herbivory, Stiff Goldenrod - Coleophora

Herbivory, Stiff Goldenrod - Coleophora
Plymouth Rock, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
February 23, 2017
Most of winter I'm content to work on insects at the computer and microscope so normally don't venture forth. But John van der Linden took me walking to look for sign of insects. Lots of good stuff.

Noted that some prairie seed heads appeared full of seeds whereas most had dropped all their seeds. Looking closer at Stiff Goldenrod, Solidago rigida, pulling seeds apart, there was seed herbivory.

Summer 2017: mystery of what was feeding on the seed may have been solved: Coleophora
