100 Acre Wood, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA

Size: 2.0 mm
March 31, 2017: collected several black knot on Cherry, Prunus sp.
April 14-15, 2017: quite a few little black flies in the container, continued to emerge until April 22, 2017
Most of the flies had mites.

Are the flies associated with Cherry or with the black knot on Cherry?
