Sagebrush mealybug - Amonostherium lichtensioides ? - Male
Los Angeles, California, USA
May 4, 2017
Size: 1mm excluding filaments
I fished this little fellow out of a pail of freshwater I was preparing to use for compost tea. It took him a couple of minutes to gather his wits and swab himself off before he flew away, so I was able to capture a few iPhone photos (fitted with an Olloclip macro lens at 21x magnification). I hadn't the slightest idea what this was until a fellow macro enthusiast pointed me in the direction of Peter J. Bryant's photos of Sagebrush Mealybugs which seem to be quite similar.
