Size: Probably about an inch
I found this on a leaf on a tall (over 5') Crown of Thorns plant outdoors. My husband said it was a cockroach and I couldn't believe it! I have recently moved to FL from New Hamp, and up north cockroaches are very small and don't look like this. Plus, we don't see them. I think I've seen only one in all of my 64 yrs living up north. Also, is a Palmetto bug a roach? People on Flickr.com say it is. But they look entirely different from what's in my picture. I've been searching all over the web and am very confused. I did find one that looks like this. Thanks for any help you can give.

Eurycotis floridana
Looks like a typical E. floridana nymph :)

That's definitely a roach,
and yes, roaches are frighteningly bigger in the South! Your picture looks a lot like this one to me:

Cockroach
Thank you so much for your ID. They certainly are scary. Yuk. I was wondering if it was the Florida Woods one. Someone commented on my pic in Flickr.com that it was that. One person said palmettos were roaches and another said they were not. But all the searching I did said they are. Thanks again.
