Hoverfly (Eupeodes (Metasyrphus) americanus ???) in Arlington, Virginia - Eupeodes
Arlington, Virginia, USA
May 15, 2017
It landed on my Arlington National Cemetery guide. I took a picture of it. A few moments later it flew off, landed on the palm of my hand and spent a few minutes "tasting" my hand with its proboscis. After researching images on the internet I am guessing this is Eupeodes (Metasyrphus) americanus.

Eupeodes americanus
Eupeodes americanus. can be difficult to separate from Eupeodes pomus and you can see on BugGuide many have been placed in americanus/pomus group. However the broad yellow band on tergite 2 has a very straight anterior edge and the frons is virtually totally yellow And I think this is americanus. Tergite 5 seems to be somewhat deformed and I can`t see a genital capsule even though the touching eyes says it is a male.
Could this be an intersex or just a deformed male?
