Robber fly - Megaphorus

Robber fly - Megaphorus
Chiricahua National Monument, Cochise County, Arizona, USA
August 11, 2007
Size: < 1 inch
Encountered at Bonita Creek Picnic Area just inside the park. Approximately 5200 feet elevation. I knew the flies were there from the previous day, but was having difficulty getting a pic until I found this little patch of vegetation near the stream. There were several individuals in this area.

The previous day I had also encountered one at a little parking area on Apache Pass Rd just west of Fort Bowie National Historic Site.

I believe it to be a Megaphorus of some kind.

I agree
It is a Megaphorus species. And it may be one of the subspecies of frustra in the SW which I am not sure have been sorted out adequately. Looks more like the CA version but I will have Dr. Fisher check it out.

And what a fine shot. Everyone else can quit shooting these.
