maybe a variable checkerspot - Microtia dymas - Female
southern Arizona - Tucson area, Arizona, USA
March 1, 2017
I thought it might be a variable checkerspot, though I couldn't find an image online that matched it.

a female "Tiny Checkerspot"
Moved from ID Request.

Confusion (my middle name)
Is Microtia dymas a synonym for Dymasia dymas? I Googled tiny checkerspot and got hits with the latter name.

Yes, synonyms
I often forget to comment on name changes that might cause confusion. when I move these to their respective pages on BugGuide.
Microtia hasn't widely caught on yet, but molecular data backs the combination of Microtia, Dymasia, and Texola, and I think it will catch on before much longer. The separation of these three "micro-genera" has always seemed silly to me (also, some of the most closest related species are split between the three traditional genera, which is also silly).
In fact they could easily be combined as a subgenus under Chlosyne, but they are a distinctive group of tiny Checkerspots, and I suspect that is less likely to happen.

Often, if you go to the main page for a species or genus on BugGuide [click on the "Info" tab near the top], you can find a list of synonyms there. And there is such a list for this species.

Thank you!
I appreciate the information.
