Cicindela limbalis

Cicindela limbalis
Block Island, Washington County, Rhode Island, USA
May 16, 2017
I found several of this species (perhaps mixed with C. purpurea) along the bluffs in front of my house, Scotch Beach. They were far outnumbered by Cicindela repanda, a species I find here commonly throughout the summer.

Moved from Common Tiger Beetles. Thanks Frank and Peter! I was really having trouble with this one.

limbalis
Hi Aaron. I sent you an email just now with more detail but I think this is limbalis. These two species can be tricky, lots of variations, and they co-occur in time and place, but I think the "crank" and humeral dot (although yes, rarely purpurea can have these as well) show this to be limbalis - albeit one with reduced markings.

I too favor C. limbalis
based on what Frank stated plus the shape and extent of the apical macule are useful separators respectively for limbalis vs purpurea:

medial border is strongly widened and touches sutural bead vs medial border is weakly widened and does not reach sutural bead.
