Black-shouldered Spinyleg? - Dromogomphus spinosus

Black-shouldered Spinyleg? - Dromogomphus spinosus
Portland, Cumberland County, Maine, USA
August 16, 2007
Size: 2.5"
Perched on leaf litter for quite some time. I am looking at Stokes Beginner's Guide to Dragonflies, and seeing that most of the description seems to apply to this individual. I thought a bit about the Unicorn clubtail but the thorax color patterns didn't seem to fit.

Can anyone confirm?

Yes,
it certainly looks like a Black-shouldered Spinyleg. The other clubtails don't have such a broad black stripe on the "shoulder". Also, the Unicorn Clubtail and many others are early-season species. They wouldn't be around by now.

Thanks
Thanks, June! Good to know. Quite a surprise to see this guy in my yard -- I'm used to seeing various skimmers, but not these. Now I'm wondering if he's one of the species that was in the swarming the other day, along with some mosaic darners.

Probably not in the swarm.
I don't recall ever seeing Clubtails swarming. By the way, I can't tell for sure from the photo, but I think this dragonfly is a "she". That also explains her presence in your yard - females wander quite a ways from water sometimes.
