Ground beetle - Poecilus lucublandus

Ground beetle - Poecilus lucublandus
Harvard, Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA
September 24, 2004
Size: 1/2"
Is it possible to tell what Carabidae this is from a photo ?

Poecilus lucublandus
This is the distinctive pterostichine, Poecilus lucublandus, which has made a couple of appearances on the guide so far.

Matt

Poecilus lucublandus
Thanks for the ID Matt.

Guess
Pterostichus or Amara?

Probably neither.
In general, Amara are much more elliptical, and smaller (I'm guessing at the size a bit). Pterostichus generally have the pronotum constricted behind, such that the elytral bases are much wider than the hind edge of the pronotum.
