Parnassius clodius - female

Parnassius clodius - Female
Hurricane Ridge area, ~4600 ft., Clallam County, Washington, USA
August 11, 2007
For ID I used Pyle ((1)), as well as Kristi Knowles pocket guide ((2)).
Note the entirely black antennae (as opposed to the black-and-white barred antennae of P. smintheus , of which a subspecies also flies in the Olympics.), shiny black abdomen (that of males is more furry), and the big, white sphragis (a plug placed by the male after mating, to prevent access by other males; see adjacent photo).

Nice photos!
Another key character, the semi-translucency of the wings, is very apparent in these shots.

Good to see another Calphotos contributor
on bugguide! Yes, the semitransparent wings, due to a lack of scales, and feeling like parchment paper, were obvious even in the field.

Likewise
I admired many of your plant photos before I bumped into your (awesome!) insect photos on BugGuide. Also have the highest regard for Joyce Gross's amazing photos (one of the people who makes CalPhotos tick).

BugGuide is really special! I enjoy the comments threads: they enhance learning...and comraderie. Problem is, this website is distracting me from posting all my 100's of plant photos in the pipeline for CalPhotos :-)
