Brachinus - Brachinus costipennis

Brachinus - Brachinus costipennis
Christy Ranch, Santa Barbara County, California, USA
May 18, 2017
On rocky ground adjacent to stream.

how was the species ID made?
I ask because it is a difficult group, even with specimens in-hand. Not saying the ID is wrong, just curious how it was determined.

The pronotum shape and hairless elytra seem diagnostic
plus w/ records already from this area.

not sure about your fauna...
but in AZ you can flip over a rock and find 5 different species that superficially look the same.
Let's hope a carabid specialist chimes in to confirm, thanks!

Also seemed pale ventrally...thought it was water reflection
Reading the info page...but did not want to mess with it too much. One of my friends had eye surgery after one of these raised its abdomen and sprayed into his eye!

I once aspirated a pseudomorphine carabid...
didn't think I'd ever get that taste out of my mouth...
