syrphid fly - Parhelophilus laetus
Bellingham, Whatcom County, Washington, USA
May 27, 2017
On yellow flag iris. There were many of these, and they were entering past the lips deep inside the flowers to reach the nectar.

Compare with http://bugguide.net/node/view/663464/bgpage. According to expert Jeff Skevington, "Leg colour pattern helps to identify this species."

Same leg color patterns, same abdomen pattern.

Also: Key to the genera of nearctic Syrphidae (http://bugguide.net/node/view/840155), see photo p. 286.
