Cleridae, larva in stem - Phyllobaenus pubescens

Cleridae, larva in stem - Phyllobaenus pubescens
McCarthy Lake Wildlife Management Area, Wabash County, Minnesota, USA
August 22, 2016
Previously I had tried, unsuccessfully, rearing stem borers on Prairie Sage, Artemisia ludoviciana, and Western Ragweed, Ambrosia psilostachya.
Unsuccessful rearings always stick in my mind such that I want to try again, try, try again.

July 30, 2016: collected what I thought were lep larvae in the stems of both of the above plants.
This rearing was associated with Western Ragweed but this one was associated with Prairie Sage.
Both plants definitely had lep larvae but also these purplish larvae.
Once I got them home and was able to look more closely, these weren't leps. But were them stem borers or stem visitors?

August 4, 2016: nothing in one of the two plant stems (there was something there when I collected) and in the other stem what looked like a pre-pupa purplish larva. Tried to tape the stem back together.
August 7, 2016: found a tiny nearly dead wasp, mangled
August 8, 2016: this wasp

November 29, 2016: just before putting the rearing jars into the refrigerator for the winter, larva was still alive, barely it seems

late March, early April 2017: rearing jars taken out of the refrigerator

April 5, 2017: larva still alive, wow, gave it a bit of moist peat and dry TP. At least the larva overwintered

May 21, 2017: an adult beetle, thrilling
I guessed Phyllobaenus sp. Wrong.
