Green insect - Timema

Green insect - Timema
Montecito, Santa Barbra County, California, USA
May 28, 2017
Size: 1.5 inches
I found this insect under my sleeping pad while I was camping on top of Montecito Peak. It raised its tail above its head in a curled up fashion at me much like a scorpion.

Low-angle view of terminalia makes it difficult to say for sure
...but my best guess is it's a male. Details of the terminalia are not sufficiently clear to provide for diagnosis for species (plus it may still be a nymph)...but from the location here it's almost certainly T. cristinae.

Timema often curl as you've described when alarmed and/or when responding to be poked at, or trying to gain balance while in a precarious position, etc.
