Explanation of Names

The Latin word "defessa" means exhausted. It might refer to relative sluggishness of these flies during the cool autumn and spring months when they are commonly observed (compare, also, the specific epithet of Schroederella iners, meaning lazy).

Northeastern North America: MN-NB, south to MO-TN (2)

Usually collected in or near caves
