Chrysomela sp. ? - Chrysomela

Chrysomela sp. ? - Chrysomela
James Wood Landing, Umpqua River, near Umpqua, Douglas County, Oregon, USA
June 4, 2017
Size: about 4 mm
This small larvae was feeding on tender leaves on a cottonwood sapling, near the Umpqua river. I accidentally jarred the leaf it was on and was amazed when two rows of white balls popped up ... and soon disappeared (see next photo). I jarred the leaf again, and up they popped again. I'm reasonably certain the white balls are a defensive mechanism -- they stink! Older larvae on the same leaf looked similar, but didn't have the little balls pop up.
