Stem borer, big bluestem - Thrypticus - female

Stem borer, big bluestem - Thrypticus - Female
Bald Spot Prairie, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
June 7, 2017
Base of dead stem, big bluestem, showing chamber created by the overwintering larva and exuviae left behind by emerging adult. Big bluestem dead stems are normally solid throughout, which gives you an idea of how much pith the larva excavated to create the hollow area shown here. Higher on the dead stem, above this chamber, the larva left only a very narrow tunnel through the middle of the pith as it bored downward.
