I have seen a similar bug on my citrus tree here in Louisiana. It's abdomen seems to be pointing inward and upward, while it leans back on its back wings. Have you determined its species name or any additional information about this behavior?

 
Fascinating
and how strange indeed! The first thing that comes to mind for me is: poop mimicry. Looking at the thumbnails for these images -- as if seeing the fly from more of a distance -- it looks like the fly could just be a few clumps of caterpillar frass on a leaf. But who knows if the resemblance is intentional...
